✩ What is Quantum Cryptography?
So recently I gave a presentation at my university on Quantum Cryptography, I would like to share a few important highlights.
The first question that might arise is
What is Quantum Cryptography?
The art and science of concealing the message to introduce secrecy in information security is recognised as Cryptography
The word CRYPTOGRAPHY comes from A greek words "Krypto" and "graphene" it means "secret writing"
To understand what is Quantum Cryptography we have to go through a few keywords
Quantum
A Quantum is the minimum amount of any physical entity involved in an interaction.
The fundamental notion that a physical property can be "quantised" is referred to as "the hypothesis of quantisation."
As we have understood some keywords we see that Quantum Cryptography is
The science of exploring quantum mechanical properties to perform cryptographic tasks
So it uses current knowledge of physics to develop a cryptosystem i.e is not been able to be defeated
✩ Quantum Key Distribution
QKD is a secure communication method that implements a cryptographic protocol involving components of quantum mechanics.
It enables two parties to produce a shared random secret key known only to them, which then can be used to encrypt and decrypt messages. It is often incorrectly called quantum cryptography, as it is the best-known example of a quantum-cryptographic task
✩ MAIN PROPERTIES
Particles can exist in more than one place or state at a time.
A quantum property cannot be observed without changing or disturbing it.
Whole particles cannot be copied.
✩ Why Quantum Cryptography?
It is the only know method for transmitting a secret key over a distance that is secure in principle and based on the laws of physics
✩ Why is it so Secure?
The quantum no-cloning theorem states that an unknown state cannot be cloned.
In a quantum system, which can be in one of the two states, any attempt to measure the quantum state will disturb the system. A quantum message that is intercepted and read by an eavesdropper will reproduce in a confused and distorted way and be useless to the intended recipient of the message.
The efforts produced by measuring a quantum property are irreversible.
✩ Advantages
virtually Un-hackable
Simple to use
Fewer resources are needed to maintain it
Used to deflect Eavesdropping in Quantum Key Distribution
✩ Disadvantages
Relatively high cost
Does not solve the authentication problem
The signal is currently limited to 90 miles (145km)
Could replace a lot of jobs
✩ Conclusion
It is now in its preliminary stage of research, also due to the high cost of implementation and the adequacy of current cryptological methods, it is unlikely that quantum cryptography will be in widespread use for several years.
